Después de liderar un resurgimiento liberal, Carney arranca a toda velocidad.

Four days after his election win and assuming leadership of the Liberal Party to retain power, Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed a timetable and broad legislative agenda for his new government.

During a press conference on Friday, Mr. Carney announced plans to travel to Washington on Tuesday to commence negotiations with President Trump regarding economic and trade matters, particularly addressing the United States’ 25 percent tariffs on Canadian vehicles, steel, and aluminum, which were prominent issues during the campaign.

Despite President Trump’s repeated statements about annexing Canada as the 51st state, Mr. Carney assured that the topic of Canada’s sovereignty did not arise during his conversation with the U.S. president post-election. Trump commended Carney as a “very nice gentleman,” while also noting that both Carney and his main opponent, Pierre Poilievre, expressed negative sentiments towards him during the campaign.

Mr. Carney refrained from divulging specific details about his strategy for engaging with Mr. Trump, emphasizing that negotiations would not be conducted publicly and asserting that Canada’s sovereignty was non-negotiable.

The recent election results were both a victory and a setback for the Liberals and Conservatives, with the Liberals receiving their highest vote percentage since 1984 but falling short of the majority in the House of Commons. Conversely, the Conservatives garnered more votes and seats, particularly in Ontario, but still ended up losing.

Despite the challenges, Mr. Carney’s win marked a remarkable comeback for the Liberals, who were trailing significantly in the polls just months ago. As Mr. Carney navigates his new role as a political novice, Canadians are eager to see how he handles the responsibilities ahead.

The upcoming Parliament session on May 26 will bring further surprises, including the rare occasion of King Charles delivering the speech from the throne instead of the governor general, signaling Canada’s sovereignty amidst external pressures. Puede contactarse en [email protected].
