El presidente de Ucrania, Volodymyr Zelensky, se reúne con el presidente de Sudáfrica, Cyril Ramaphosa, para contrarrestar a Rusia.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has concluded a historic visit to South Africa, indicating a significant improvement in the previously strained relations between the two nations. This visit was a diplomatic breakthrough for Zelensky as he sought to counter Russia’s increasing influence in Africa.

Steven Gruzd of the South African Institute of International Relations think-tank mentioned, “I’m sure that Russia will be annoyed by the visit, but I don’t think it can do much about it.” However, Russia disrupted Zelensky’s visit by conducting an air strike on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, prompting him to shorten the trip and return home after meeting President Cyril Ramaphosa.

President Ramaphosa described the visit as strengthening the bonds between the two countries, noting that Zelensky’s visit was the first by a Ukrainian head of state in 33 years. This was also Zelensky’s first visit to Africa since becoming Ukraine’s president in 2019.

The significance of African states in diplomacy was highlighted by Ukraine when many, including South Africa, did not condemn Russia’s invasion of its territory in 2022. Mr. Gruzd mentioned, “Ukraine neglected the continent in terms of foreign policy, but it has changed that over the last three years, doubling its embassies from 10 to 20.”

Zelensky’s visit to South Africa was crucial at this point, given the strained relationship with the US since President Donald Trump took office. This further emphasized the need for international legitimacy for Ukraine beyond Europe.

President Ramaphosa saw Zelensky’s visit as an opportunity to enhance his image as a peacemaker, focusing on efforts to achieve a comprehensive peace. The leaders also discussed working towards a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The visit also aimed to strengthen trade ties between South Africa and Ukraine, as both countries faced economic challenges. Prof Zondi highlighted the potential for South Africa to serve as Ukraine’s gateway to Africa, benefiting both nations in extending their influence on the continent. This could mark a new chapter in Ukraine-Africa relations without necessarily impacting relations with Russia. “No se puede esperar elegir lados”, dijo el analista.
