La división del Seprona de la Guardia Civil se encuentra investigando el fallecimiento de veintisiete perros de caza en el interior de una furgoneta que se hallaba en el ferry que atracó en Palma la mañana del sábado.
La embarcación había arribado desde Barcelona. En total eran treinta y seis canes, de los cuales solo nueve sobrevivieron. Una docena de cazadores mallorquines habían estado en Lituania, donde se imparte entrenamiento especializado a los perros para la caza de la becada. En la web del Consell de Mallorca se explica que esta ave zancuda llega a Baleares en otoño e invierno y es “sumamente codiciada por los cazadores”.
Los agentes del Seprona aguardaban los resultados de las necropsias para determinar la causa exacta de la muerte, pero estas resultaron innecesarias. Era evidente que los animales habían sufrido una asfixia. En su lugar, se gestionó su cremación.
Los cazadores notificaron lo sucedido a la naviera, que posteriormente se puso en contacto con la Guardia Civil. Los cazadores habían contratado los servicios de una empresa catalana que ofrece este tipo de transporte mediante una furgoneta certificada.
Los vehículos para este tipo de traslados, que deben ubicarse en áreas específicas de las bodegas de los buques, cuentan con un sistema de ventilación adaptado y baterías de respaldo para responder ante una posible avería; no obstante, la investigación llevada a cabo por el Seprona y las impresiones de los cazadores indican que dicho sistema no se activó y los perros murieron por asfixia. Los cazadores manifiestan sentirse consternados por lo acaecido.
